Frequently asked questions

What is a mushroom culture?  Mushrooms are made of mycelia, which are fine hair-like structures. We sell mycelia suspended in a liquid nutrient broth (liquid culture syringes) or growing on petri dishes. Liquid Culture syringes are ideal for inoculating grain jars if you do not have a sterile environment. If you have a sterile laboratory, you may want to work with petri dishes, which can be expanded to other dishes and saved as slants, in addition to inoculating grain jars.

Where do these cultures originate?  Many of our cultures are commercial strains, and others we collected, cultured, and have grown ourselves. Regardless, all of these strains grow vigorously in culture and, under appropriate conditions, will fruit.

How long will my order take?  Liquid culture syringes generally ship within 24 hours of receiving your order. Petri dishes are made to order, so can take 2-3 weeks to colonize a dish depending on the strain and to ensure the cultures are contaminant-free. We hope you can understand that cultivating mushrooms takes time, and we will keep you updated as to the status of your order along the way and ship it out as soon as it is ready.

How are cultures shipped?  We ship using USPS Ground Advantage or Priority mail with standard boxes or padded envelopes. Labels are discrete - the return address is from CM with a PO Box.
